If you've been looking for fun tools to help get your kids excited to read, or even just practice reading words they already know, I've made something for you! :)
The "Treasure Hunt" Game - Pirate Edition! is the second printable PDF treasure hunt game in a series of fun games I've created to help parents encourage their young kids to practice reading while having a blast hunting throughout the house for clues to a "treasure". Silly talking characters of all sorts help guild their way.
This type of interactive reading activity has, by far, been the most successful (and fun!) way of getting my own child excited to read. Sounding out the words is the way you get to the next clue and, of course, that TREASURE, so every bit of reading effort is totally worth it! :)
The game is pretty straight forward:
- Download and print the 3 page PDF file.
- Cut out the rectangular "clue cards" (Each clue card is a fourth of a page. There are ten clue cards total.)
- Hide the clue cards in the designated hiding locations in your house, with a "treasure" of your choice at the end of the clues. (I usually plant a snack or toy there and it works beautifully)
- Give your child the first clue and watch them hunt! If they are very young beginning readers, you can read most of the words in the clue and have them only read the underlined words.
Tip: If you hide the clues backwards, starting with the last clue, it keeps you from having to reread where the next one needs to go in case you forget. I learned this the hard way multiple times. :p
